Every year for the last decade, we have been commissioned to undertake an evaluation of the Heritage Schools programme for Historic England. This programme encourages teachers to think about using what is local to their school, to bring their local history and heritage to life and increase a sense of local pride. Each year we have been tasked with evaluating the impact of the CPD training provided by Historic England in relation to this programme and exploring what impact the Heritage Schools project has had on schools, teachers, pupils and partner organisations.
A mixed methods approach has been used to comprehensively evaluate the programme’s impact. This included quantitative surveys conducted with teachers attending CPD courses, and with heritage partners involved in the programme. We also visited schools and heritage organisations involved in the programme across the UK. Through interviews with teachers and pupils, as well as a review of their work, a series of case studies were developed that vividly demonstrated its effect.
Each year our research has provided Historic England with detailed evidence of the impact of the programme, enabling them to review their processes, work out what was effective and identifying any changes which could enhance their work further. The reports also allowed Historic England to demonstrate that funding is well-used, showcasing the value of the Heritage Schools programme.
